I had
recently successfully cleared the FAICO (Fellowship of the All India Collegium
of Ophthalmology) examination conducted by the AIOS. As Ophthalmologists in India may already know, FAICO is conducted for those
who have completed their postgraduation in Ophthalmology and have at least a
year’s experience in any particular sub speciality (ie Cornea, IOL, Glaucoma,
Retina, Oculoplasty, etc). It is being conducted annually since 2010.
FAICO is a
2 part examination:
1. Part 1 is an online screening
examination (1 hour) for which the cut off is 70%.
2. Part 2: OSCE and Viva
Therefore
it is mainly attempted by those who have completed or are currently doing a
long term fellowship in any sub specialty. It is also attempted by those who
have not done any formal fellowship but have worked in any particular sub specialty for at least a year.
When I set out to prepare for this examination, I soon realized that not even one person who has cleared the examination in the past 6 years has posted their experiences online. The doctors applying for this exam could range from someone currently doing their fellowship/senior residency after PG to doctors who finished their training and have been practicing for a long time.
So currently, anyone attempting the exam for the first time has no idea what type/level of assessment they are about to undergo.
So anybody attempting the examination for the first time has to look up doctors who have successfully cleared the exam (it’s posted on the AIOS website), contact them personally to ask them about their experience.
How I wish
there was a website where all doctors who clear the exam post their experiences
so that others would benefit.(something like mrcophth.org, but that would be too much to expect at this point as the examination is relatively new)
Well, I
have decided to take the first step with this blog and will be posting my experiences and, of course, what I
remember of the questions asked to me.
I request all my fellow doctors who have attempted/cleared the FAICO exam in any sub speciality of ophthalmology to please do the same as it will be a huge help to those who intend to give the exam in future.

I have appeared for cornea subspecialty twice but questions are vague and can have more that 2 answers correct. Also rate for passing in cornea category is 1% only.since last 4 years only 4 to 5 people have cleared it. Dont know the reason.

DeleteHi
DeleteI have one query
I have done my DOMS AND SEC.DNB
Now doing SR ship and in 3rd year of SR ship but not in any subspecialty I just to cataract surgeries in my hospital
Is I am eligible for the part 1 FAICO
For Part I FAICO, you need to submit 1 year post PG experience in the speciality you want to appear for, from the department head of the institute where you are working. If you have done any speciality work even during SR post, it'll be considered. It's only in the part 2 where they can ask you about the overall experience in that particular speciality.
DeleteI hav appeared for and cleared both stages of the exam in oculoplasty. The questions in the online test were ok.i think with sufficient theory knowledge can be cleared.
ReplyDeleteThe practical (Osce + viva voce) was tough in comparison.... The Osce part had some tough questions. The pattern was - one case (photograph/video/description) followed by 5 questions. I think v had ~5mins/spot. The viva voce was not really tough, but a lot of ppl flubbed easy questions. I think with sufficient preparation (and clinical experience) can clear it!
What books do you recommend to read for preparation of the exam?
DeleteDr shalmali how many osce were there
DeleteDr shalmali can u pls suggest wat and all books to read for FAICO oculoplasty
DeleteWhen do you exactly get the application forms for FAICO and when is the exam exactly?
ReplyDeleteIts available on the aios website www.aios.org by june or July. The first part will be some time in September. The second part will be in November December. Remember, u have to be an AIOS member to apply.

ReplyDeleteI am planning to appear for cataract. How to prepare
I am planning to apply for Comprehensive Ophthalmology FAICO exam.please guide regarding preparation
ReplyDeleteI cleared refractive surgery last year.5 questions were around the fibrin glue and another 5 were about 3 and 6 omega fatty acids. Some questions are about cornea-DSAEK and DALK.
ReplyDeleteIf our concept about fibrin glue is wrong,we will lose all 5 questions ,same for omega fatty acids too.I donno why questions on glue,DALK ,DSAEK were covered in refractive surgery.
I think.there is no particular book to study .
Practical was good.It all depends on our practical experience.Theory cannot help in Viva OCSE.
So...good theory ( should go through the % and scientists etc ) knowledge for online exam and practical experience for OCSE is important.
Fresh fellows will clear it very easily.
